Since the start of the pandemic, there has been a worrying increase in the number of domestic violence cases reported, a situation which has been amplified since the devastating second wave of Covid-19 in India.
Our friends at Odanadi, have experienced an influx in the number of calls to their helpline, with 543 calls concerning cases of domestic violence, sexual exploitation and human trafficking received since February. In order to continue to respond to the increasing number of women and children escaping violence at home, Odanadi have opened a separate Covid-19 isolation ward for new residents as well as incorporating extra precautions into their daily routines such as regular testing, social distancing, mask wearing and the use of hand sanitizer to protect all residents.
The mechanics workshop, bakery school and beauticians training centre have temporarily closed their doors to prevent the spread of infection. Although, the older girls at Odanadi have enjoyed passing on their skills and knowledge from their beautician’s training to the younger girls during the lockdown. The residents are also keeping themselves busy with activities such as crafts, reading, gardening and playing games.
